Robotics engineers focus on technology, building, and research. They seek to improve efficiency in workflow, sometimes with the goal of eliminating or reducing the possibility of human error. Depending on the field the robotics are being used for, robots can even save lives and make the workplace a safer place to be.

1. Focus on STEM Studies in High School

In high school, aim to take as many STEM courses as possible. "STEM" courses include science, technology, engineering, and math. More specifically, you should attempt to take physics courses and an abundance of math courses. If possible, you should also take any advanced courses in these areas. 

Robotics engineers use a variety of STEM-related skills on a daily basis. Making a point to learn about these subjects in high school will place you in a better position to succeed at the college level. Completing these courses and getting good grades will also improve your application to your desired colleges. 

Participating in a technology or robotics club at your high school will also be a beneficial addition to your college application. 

2. Earn a Bachelor's Degree

The next step in becoming a robotics engineer is earning your Bachelor's degree. A Bachelor's degree is the minimum educational requirement to work as a robotics engineer. However, for advanced positions, more education may be required.

The most useful degree paths to pursue are mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and/or computer programming. Some colleges also offer robotics engineering degrees, but if this specific course of study isn't available at your university then an engineering degree will also suffice. 

To ensure you're taking the correct courses at your college, speak with a professor or an advisor. Let them know your intentions of becoming a robotics engineer and allow them to help you select the best course of study at your school. You could also attempt to speak with a robotics engineer to get their advice as well. 

3. Get Experience

Get experience in the robotics field as often as you can during your undergrad program. Complete internships, work-study programs, and offer to volunteer to help with robotics clubs or programs. Speak with your professors as well to see if they have any work experience opportunities you could participate in. 

You should also seek out interview skill practice to better your chances of landing your dream job. 

4. Consider Additional Education

For advanced positions, you may need to earn your Master's degree and/or a PhD degree in your field. If you plan on teaching robotics at the college level in the future, then obtaining your PhD will be necessary. 

Getting these additional degrees can help to advance your career and improve your overall salary.
