2018 Tech Salary Trend
The lack of skilled IT workers is hurting the deployment of emerging technology, according to a new survey from Gartner. In areas from cloud to cybersecurity, this crisis is expected to last for years to come.
Pervasiveness of
technology in every industry and lack of professionals to implement it
successfully impacts the bottom-line. Robert Half report states - “The
persistent shortage of technology workers is no longer just an inconvenience
for many employers – it’s quickly becoming a serious business problem.”
IT professionals are
definitely in a position of power and are demanding higher salaries. As a
result several companies are unable to hire top talent and according to Robert
Hal report 44% of CIOs indicated that they are unable to meet the salary
demands of top talent. This is undoubtedly a huge problem for these
companies.
Though companies have
attempted to circumvent this challenge by hiring temporary workers, this
strategy has not worked very well in the long run. They have to offer higher
pay and other perks to attract talent.
Are All IT Job Salaries Trending Higher?
IT pros with certain skills in
will be able to demand higher paychecks. What are those skills? According to
Robert Half Technology guide, these job titles are in great demand for 2018:
- Data Scientists
- Business Intelligence Analysts,
- Database Developers,
- DevOps Engineers,
- Help Desk Experts,
- System Admins,
- Network Admins and
- Security Professionals
There are two criteria that are very important when companies consider offering a higher salary. Not every professional with the same skillset will get the same salary.
Most important is experience.
Companies look at years of experience and also relevance of experience or type
projects successfully delivered or managed.
Second is location. Cost of
living varies in different cities within United States; hence salary will be in
proportion to that. Cost of living is highest in New York – 40.5% higher than
average; San Francisco is 40% higher than average; Boston 34% and so on.
Besides these, it will also
depend on the urgency of hiring a qualified candidate. For the right
professional, if the company is in need of a particular professional on an
urgent basis, they are likely to accept the candidate’s demand.

the way they list IT salary ranges. They listed various percentiles of
experience – more experience translates to higher salary. Below is a list that
provides range from the 25th percentile that means significant, highly relevant
experience; to the 95th percentile that translates to more experience than
typical:
Chief Technology Officer (CTO)
2018 average salary range:
$145,000 – $248,000.
The 2017 salary was a 3.3%
increase over this job's 2016 salary range, which was $147,500 – $229,000.
Developer/Programmer Analyst
2018 average salary range:
$86,750 – $146,000.
The 2017 salary range was an
increase of 4.3% over this job’s 2016 salary range, which was $80,000 –
$137,000.
