Freelancing is not a new phenomenon but in the last decade or so, gig-economy as it is known has taken off and grown at an accelerated pace. This is partly due to the advances in technologies that have made it possible for professionals to work remotely in an efficient manner. Freelancers are not necessarily always remote but there is a higher probability in case of hard-to-find skill sets.

Freelancing has seen a wide-spread acceptance among companies in all industries and especially in the IT sector. IT managers claim that hiring freelancers helps them manage their projects more effectively- they can hire temporary workers when the need arises to augment their project team thus avoiding delays and cancellations of projects.

This hiring strategy has also gained popularity due to the difficulty in finding the technology professionals with the right set of skills.

According to Stephane Kasriel, CEO of Upwork, "The tech talent gap has reached a crisis point and companies are struggling with a widening tech skills gap, particularly in areas such as AI, IoT and robotics. The shortage of skilled tech professionals has become a major concern for companies. To help bridge the gap, companies are innovating their talent strategies by leveraging freelancers with the specialized skills they need to develop new technologies."

Freelancing is a win-win situation for everyone involved – IT managers and companies benefit as they are able to successfully complete projects in time and within budget and software engineers benefit in terms of experience and higher remuneration as their skills are in demand.
